Slate & tile roofing
Natural Scottish slate, stone, clay & concrete tile — repairs, re-slating and full re-roofs matched to your property's era.
From New Town conservation slate to Leith flat roofs and shared tenement repairs — a second-generation, NFRC award-winning family firm working across every corner of the city since 1996.
Ronald G Graham has been keeping Edinburgh roofs watertight for over 25 years. We're based at our own yard in Leith (EH6), which means a local team that genuinely knows the city's housing — the Victorian and Georgian slate of the New Town and Stockbridge, the tenement closes of Marchmont and Bruntsfield, the seafront exposure of Portobello and the post-war stock out toward Corstorphine and Liberton.
Edinburgh roofing isn't generic. Much of the city sits within conservation areas or involves listed buildings, and a huge proportion of repairs are shared tenement roofs governed by statutory notice and common-repair rules. We handle all of it day in, day out — sympathetic natural-slate work, lead and conservation detailing, and the paperwork and neighbour coordination that shared repairs demand.
Whether it's a single slipped slate, a full re-roof, a flat roof renewal or a 2am storm emergency, you get the same family firm, fully insured work and a guarantee behind every job.

Straight answers on conservation rules, tenement repairs, slate, costs and timing.
Often, yes. Large parts of Edinburgh — the New Town, Old Town, Stockbridge and more — sit within conservation areas, and many buildings are listed. Like-for-like repairs in natural slate are usually fine, but changing materials or appearance can need listed-building consent or conservation-area approval. We work to these rules every week, use sympathetic materials and detailing, and can advise on what (if anything) you'll need before we start.
Edinburgh tenement roofs are typically 'common' property shared by every flat in the stair, so repairs are organised and paid for jointly. Where there's a safety risk the Council can issue works under shared-repair powers. We handle tenement and shared roofs constantly — including quoting for the whole stair, coordinating with neighbours and factors, and providing the documentation owners need to agree and split costs fairly.
Historically Scottish slate (often Ballachulish or West Highland). It's largely quarried out now, so we match with reclaimed Scottish slate where authenticity matters, or high-quality natural Spanish or Welsh slate that closely matches the colour, size and weathering. In conservation areas we'll always recommend the most sympathetic option.
It depends on size, pitch, access, slate type and whether it's a house or a shared tenement. As a rough guide, repairs typically run from a few hundred pounds, while a full slate re-roof on a traditional Edinburgh property usually runs into several thousand. The only accurate figure is a free survey — we'll give you a clear, itemised quote with no obligation.
Our 24-hour emergency line is answered all year round, and because our yard is in Leith we can usually reach an Edinburgh address within about 30 minutes. We'll make the roof safe and watertight first, then arrange the permanent repair once the weather clears.
